The story from Media Research Center:
Let's not forget how Rather quickly retired from CBS shortly after it was found that he aired bogus documents on 60 Minutes regarding George W. Bush's National Guard service record -- in the final days of the 2004 election campaign, mind you. Media Myth Busters gives the background on Rather's demise:Ex-CBS Anchor Dan Rather Worried About 'Accountability' of Internet Journalism
In a Monday interview on MediaBistro.com’s weekly video series Media Beat, disgraced former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather shared his concerns over the credibility of internet journalism: “The difficulty with some of the things on the internet...is transparency and accountability about who’s responsible for what’s on.”
TVNewser.com columnist Gail Shister sparked the discussion by asking Rather: “Are you concerned at all that there is the absence of quality control when it comes to so much of the modern platforms?” Rather went on to fret: “...you can put something on the internet that’s really terrible about your neighbor or about a friend or a competitor and it’s almost impossible to find out who the source is. And you can say anything about them. That part of it troubles me.”
"Fake, but accurate?!?" The nerve of Rather to scoff at Internet journalism when he himself was found to not be transparent or accountable in his own reporting. Seriously, Dan: nut up or shut up!Memos providing the basis for many of the claims in the report were supposedly created in 1973 and found in the files of the late Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Killian. Bloggers and blog readers investigated the suspicious looking documents which were made available to the public on the CBS website and found them to almost certainly be poor forgeries created on a modern era word processor. Four CBS employees lost their jobs over the report. Dan Rather famously defended the report, claiming the memos might be "fake, but accurate" and later went into early retirement.

ON A SLOW BOAT TO LONDON
The U.K.Guardian reports, Dan Rather lawsuit to hurt Bush's legacy. Eight weeks before the 2004 presidential poll, Dan Rather broadcast a story based on newly discovered documents which appeared to show that Bush, whose service in the Texas Air National Guard ensured that he did not have to fight in Vietnam, had barely turned up even for basic duty. After an outcry from the White House and conservative bloggers who claimed that the report had been based on falsified documents, CBS retracted the story, saying that the documents' authenticity could not be verified. Rather, who had been with CBS for decades and was one of the most familiar faces in American journalism, was fired by the network the day after the 2004 election.
